Discover Caracas Bay peninsula
If you ask me about one of the most beautiful places on Curaçao, Caracas Bay Peninsula is high on my list. It’s one of those spots where you can do a little bit of everything—hiking, snorkeling, history, even a bit of urban exploration—and no matter where you go, you’re treated to incredible views over the Caribbean Sea and Spanish Water.
This little stretch of land has some real gems. You can walk up to Fort Beekenburg, an old fortress that has stood here since the 1700s (and yes, you can still climb up for an epic view). Right below the fort, the famous Tugboat wreck is a must for snorkeling—crystal-clear water, colorful fish, and a sunken ship covered in coral. If you’re up for more snorkeling, Directors Bay is another great spot, tucked away behind the cliffs.

Around Curaçao
Experience the island comfort and style as you explore in air-conditioned 4×4 SUVs or roomy 15-passenger vehicles. From east to west, It’s all up the you.
There are some cool hiking trails around the area, perfect if you want to explore the rugged coastline. And for those who love a bit of adventure, the old quarantine building is an urbex (urban exploration) dream—crumbling walls, graffiti, and a whole lot of history.
It’s a spot I keep coming back to, whether it’s for a swim, a sunset walk, or just to take in the views. If you’re visiting Curaçao and want a mix of nature, history, and adventure all in one place, you definitely don’t want to skip Caracas Bay Peninsula.

Fort Beekenburg
Build on the peninsula since 1703, Fort Beekenburg was built to protect Spanish Water, one of the few places on Curaçao’s coast where ships could safely land. Because of its strategic location, this area needed extra defense against potential invaders.
Today, the fort’s remains are free to visit, so you don’t need to pay an entrance fee to explore this historic site. You can even climb up to the tower for an incredible view over Caracas Bay. Just a heads-up—this attraction isn’t wheelchair accessible, as the climb is steep and the paths are uneven.
Insider tip: Walk around the other side of the fort, and you’ll find the Fort Beekenburg Cave—a hidden little spot worth checking out.

The Quarantine Building
From Tugboat Beach, you’ll spot the massive Quarantine Building, a structure dating back to 1883. This place was once used to observe sailors before they came ashore, ensuring no diseases were brought onto the island.
Nowadays, you can visit and explore the exterior of the building for free. However, if you decide to go inside, keep in mind that entry is at your own risk, as it’s an abandoned structure. If you’re into urban exploration, this is a cool spot to check out—and it pairs perfectly with a visit to the Tugboat wreck nearby.

Tuboat Beach
The Tugboat wreck is one of the most popular snorkeling spots near Tugboat Beach. Resting in a shallow bay at just 5 meters (16.4 feet) deep, it’s easy to explore. With crystal-clear water and a mostly calm sea, conditions here are perfect for getting a close look at the wreck and the vibrant marine life around.

Hiking at Caracas Bay Peninsula
For those who love the outdoors, Caracas Bay Peninsula is a great place to hike. Several trails wind through the rugged landscape, leading to some breathtaking viewpoints. One of the best hikes takes you up to Seru Kabritu (Goat Mountain), where you’ll get panoramic views over Spanish Water and the Sandals Resort on the old Santa Barbara plantation.

Directors Bay
A favorite among divers and snorkelers, Directors Bay is known for its pristine reef just offshore and its close proximity to the famous Tugboat wreck.
This beach has an interesting history—back in the day, it was privately owned by Shell, and only senior executives and their families were allowed to visit. These days, Directors Bay is open to everyone, making it a quiet and scenic escape.
If you visit during the week, you might have the beach all to yourself.
Visit the peninsula during a private tour
The Caracas Bay Peninsula is a great spot to explore on a private tour. With several sights and beaches just a few minutes apart, it’s an easy and convenient way to experience multiple highlights of the island in a short amount of time.
