The Caribbean Guilder: The New Currency of Curaçao
Big changes are coming to Curaçao! Starting March 31, 2025, the Caribbean guilder (Cg) will officially replace the Netherlands Antillean guilder (ANG) as our currency. It’s not just a practical update; it’s a reflection of who we are as an island—modern, vibrant, and rooted in our unique culture and environment.
The Caribbean guilder will be abbreviated as Cg, with XCG designated as its official currency code in payment systems.
The Caribbean Guilder: What’s Changing?
The Caribbean guilder will have the same value as the Netherlands Antillean guilder, pegged to the U.S. dollar at 1 USD = 1.79 Cg. Both currencies will be accepted for three months after the launch to give everyone time to adjust. After that, only the Caribbean guilder will remain in use.
If you still have ANG later on, no worries—you can exchange it at banks for a year or at the Central Bank for up to 30 years.

Designed to Represent The Islands
The Caribbean guilder isn’t just another currency. Its design showcases what makes Curaçao and Sint Maarten special. Each banknote features marine life and landmarks from our islands. Here’s a quick rundown:
10 Cg: The gray angelfish and queen conch, plus Klein Curaçao’s iconic lighthouse.
20 Cg: Spotted eagle ray, yellow cowry, and the peaceful Simpson Bay Lagoon in Sint Maarten.
50 Cg: Green sea turtle and Grote Knip Beach —one of our most beautiful beaches.
100 Cg: Spotlight parrotfish and Sint Maarten’s Courthouse.
200 Cg: Longsnout seahorse and the Queen Emma Bridge, our iconic pontoon bridge.
The coins are equally detailed, featuring marine creatures and symbols that connect Curaçao and Sint Maarten.
Why Does This Matter?
Switching to the Caribbean guilder is more than just a currency update—it’s about making sure our monetary system is secure and modern. With strong designs that represent the heart of Curaçao and Sint Maarten, this change helps us stay ahead while showing pride in our islands’ heritage.
